hexcell is quite expensive, and not really necessary. boats and planes can be built without resorting to it, and they need much more strength and stiffness :)
Kledgecell or similar high density foams will work. Densitys aproach that of wood :) You can also use ordinary pink building (insulation) foam,a vailable in 4x8 sheets (2" thick). It carves with a sureform rasp quite easily, I have used it to make molds with good success.
