Subject: no powered subwoofer

i recently bought a 300 watt subwoofer buts its unpowed and i have a sony home audio sytems. i dont want to just connect the subwoofer to the ports in the back because im afraid that the amp in the system isnt designed to handle it. i was wondering if i could use a car amp to power the subwoofer. yes i know im stupid, any help appreciated.
