Subject: Subwoofer plate location

Hi, I read some stuff on this site but couldn't find an answer. First off, I'm a NOOB, so patience please. This is my first time building a sub-woofer for HOME use and am just going to Frankenstein some parts together. I have an old ported 12" sub box from CAR use and am planning on getting a car audio driver, and Dayton sub plate amp. Can I cut a hole in the box to countersink the amp plate, and mount? I was told this will not affect acoustics, but am not sure.
