Don't forget about power compression. For example, the JBL 1200GTi suffered 3dB compression @600W, which means that if fed a signal that averaged 600W, the output would be the same as if you fed it a signal that averaged 300W.

And then of course there's the average subwoofer's ability to run out of excursion long before the signal reaches 1200W... :-)
