PE 240w plate amp volume pot issues |

I seem to have roasted my volume potentiometer on the PE Dayton SA240 240W (#300-804). This plate amp has been driving an Adire Tempest for it's entire life. I've been using speaker-level inputs with the volume pot near maximum gain due to relatively efficient main speakers and a low power main amplifier. Naturally the crossover is set all the way down (main speakers are good to 40hz), so the input has been driven quite hard. I can hear low frequency clipping a mile away, and there is none and so I know for certain that I'm not over driving the final output stage or the driver itself.
My question is: has driving the input with that much gain blown up my volume pot? it now only works in one position after much tweaking to get both left and right channels working.
