Converting a passive sub to an active one |

I am using a conventional stereo system with a few fine electronic simulations of great organs (Hammond B3 and Wurlitzer theater organ) The 60 watt Onkyo is driving some large bookshelf speakers and a large (18" ?) PASSIVE sub. It shuts down when ever the bass sound gets big. Do you know of an inexpensive way to make the passive sub an active one?
