I too was suspect of the new Yamaha amp (actually it was an open box item from Best Buy, which raised more suspicion), but once the hum starts, it doesn't matter whether the cables are hooked to the amp or not, once any cable touches the sub's RCA inputs (any set of three RCA cables I have tried) the hum starts. It seems like a louder hum depending on the length of the cable or cables I touch to the sub's RCA inputs, even when the cables are not hooked to anything on the other end. I suspect it is some type of grounding issue in the sub's plat amp. Perhaps I will try your suggestion and check the solder joints of the plate amp!

I note that I have not grounded the amp through the antenna connection as recommended in the manual. The sub does not have any grounding plug or terminal that I can detect.

Thanks again for your input!
