Sounds like something's failing in the amplifier.

Faced with a situation like this, likely the first thing I'd do is open the amplifier and start checking for bad solder joints. Applying the tip of a hot soldering iron to each suspect joint should help to determine if there are any - do this to a bad joint and the solder will tend to "ball up" on the component's lead rather than smoothly melt around the lead and the circuit trace.

OTOH, it could be a component that's overheating and failing. Troubleshooting that is a little bit different and should really be left to someone experienced.
