I think something similar's been done already, e.g. using an active drive as a PR, but instead of driving it with an amp, using a filter circuit across the terminals to change the way it behaves at specific frequencies.
The problem with this approach IMO is that it's probably more cost-effective to go with two better drivers that work in the same size enclosure.
