Subject: Sealed, Down Firing, Car Sub

I am having a heck of a time finding research reading on down firing subs for car audio? Is this a new approach? My friend (SQ competitor) recommended I build a sealed downfiring design, and I am trying to get some education on the topic, but googling is failing me.

Specifically I am trying to understand what if any gaps need to be on the side. i.e. whether to allow air flow around the speaker frame or not. My prototpy will be build with Sonotube, and I plan to build it so I can swap out different outer ring designs to allow or prevent airflow.

Thanks,
Dan
