Great, thanks for the reply. After googling around I asked the question, and then immediately after I found some examples of external ports. I'll look at the page you recommend.
What I started thinking about were the three ports emerging from the top of the box, and then intertwining in a lazy, roughly 1/3 twist, and then terminating quick 90 degree turns with flared ports, each firing in different directions. That was mainly an aesthetic idea, but then I started thinking that it might be kind of cool to try.
