Subject: A Question of Vents


Because of the quick, helpful response to my first question, I thought i would ask a second. So I'm beginning to understand some of what WinISD is telling me about my vents (namely, Vent Mach) and I'm finding that one of the designs that I was making ended up with a vent mach of .41. Not good! (not that I understood that yesterday) So my solution was to use more 2" ports (3 vents resulting in a port mach of .05!) but the length exceeds the length of the longest side of my box.

I've been looking at DIY projects on line and have been seeing that people put curves in their vents. Fine. Seems easy enough-- but how do I calculate the "length" of a curve? The simplistic way seems to be to measure the volume with something concrete, like water, and compare the resulting volume (I have a large graduated cylinder that i use for mixing photo chemicals) to the calculated volume of the straight vent.
That seems like it would get me an accurate measure, but does anyone have a rule of thumb that gets them pretty dang close?

option 2: I was thinking of an "industrial" design that would have the vents poking out of the top like smoke stacks. Is there a reason that vents cannot extend past the physical bounds of the box? I think that I'd rather have the curves in the long run, but a tall, thin box that looks like a bass factory might be kind of cool, too :)

My goal is to make the cleanest sounding vented sub I can.
