Hi: I'm about to start on a DIY M&K Subwoofer project for a MPS-5320SFBF. I bought the cabinet from a surplus dealer and I'll be using an older Yamaha amp. Here are the specs on the 2 12 inch drivers:
In speaking with Miller and Kreisel, (M & K) I was told that the woofers were designed to work in a sealed cabinet and that perofmance could suffer if used in a ported enclousure. In examing the speaker it was found to be pretty heavy, right at 9 pounds and fitted with a pair of magnets for greater efficency, the SPL is at 90 db at 1 meter at 1 watt. The surround is very stiff which explaned the Name "Super Fast Deep Bass". What this means is that the woofer has a very quick recoivery time and will produce a better quality of bass that is crisp and not muddy. Precise reproduction of bass, not a blending of notes that happens when a woofer hasn't had time to recover, M & K's design quickens that recovery time and provides for a cleaner sound. Oh, power handling is 250 Watts RMS...
Taking it into the lab I got these specs...
Revc = 7.4440 ohms Fs = 33.57 Hz. Zmax = 223.52 ohms Ro = 40.408 ohms F0 = 27.861 ohms F1 = 40.118 ohms Fmin = 124.205 Hz Qes = 0.5179 Qms = 14.7085 Qts = 0.5003 Le = 1.8035 mH ( at 1 kHz ) Impedance is 8 ohms Power Handling is 250 watts RMS
Any suggestions on alternative (or better) drivers than these that are similar in specs? Thank you very much.
Roy
