i know you didn't intend to relate your two comments but, in the 60's drivers couldn't reasonably produce subbass either... Interesting concept though, a separate amp for vocals.

If your bassist uses a 5-string or larger bass, the low b is 30ish hz, so you need go no lower than that. If the has a low F# string-which I doubt, 23ish hz is the optimum. If your bassist uses only 4 strings, you only need 40hz response. Keep in mind that lower cutoffs will also add 'hugeness' to the bass drum, but the transient power requirements get quite ridiculous. Well-used compression is your friend for a small PA.
