Converting a passive subwoofer to an active subwoofer is simple - all you need to do is add an amplifier. You basically have two options: (1) buy one of the available subwoofer "plate" amplifiers, cut a whole in the box, attach the amplifier and connect it accordingly, or (2) buy a standalone subwoofer amplifier (you could use one of the aforementioned subwoofer plate amplifiers and build a small box to hold it) and connect it to the subwoofer.
