What you are saying is true.... no doubt. But this is all part of the fun and appeal of the hobby, making things possible that normally to many are not. I can't begin to describe the odds and ends, all the wierd stuff I've experimented with, just to see if it works... boxes made out of rubbish containers and all sorts, carboard speaker boxes, car audio inside the house, house audio in the car etc.
The trick is here, that many of the Dell PC systems sold to gamers and that sort, were sold with a "THX" speaker system, the subwoofer, at least in the ones I've seen was a dual 6.5" or dual 8" (can't remember) setup that produce an incredible amount of bass in small offices etc. Was it a brahma or a tempest, no, but explosions it handled well. So to say that some $60 Visionik setup from Pep Boys would be able to compete, I'd say you're mistaken. Now power inverters can be pricey, but for the power requirements of a single PC sub amp, you could easily find one on eBay for $30 or less.... or take a more electronic approach and create a voltage regulator and hardwire the sub amp's power cord to the auto electric, this is usually a tad more difficult than an inverter.
Though what you said for the most part is accurate, again I must reitterate the idea of fun and experimentation. Anyone can make a sealed box based on some graph of what someone told you sounds the best, but why not make an adjustable box so you can see yourself.... you know??
