that's how most woofers for computer speakers work. Which really isn't all bad. The headphone jack that your current speakers are using can be cut off, and you can splice the standard RCA jacks right on to it.

So if your quest was to make your own box and woofer for this setup, you'll get to have quite a bit of fun. If you use a standard plate amp, depending on your power requirements, most have speaker outs and/or RCA outs. If the amp has speaker outs, just cut the headphone jack, peel back a little bit of the wiring covering, a red and white wire should be there. Red is always right and split the ground wire into 2 even amounts and hook right up into the speaker out jacks.

Easy enough, but they are really small wires, so I usually use a lighter to strip the jacket off the wire.
