Subwoofer box with hinges |

I posted on here earlier about my project that have have to do for a college course. well, i have created the design but now i am down to choosing a finish. The only hard part about the project is that my subwoofer box has to be able to open up at the top so you can see in. My choices are....to use birch and then stain the box, use mdf and apply a veneer, or use mdf and sand and then paint it with a urethane paint and clear coat. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to lock down the top of the box without compromising asthetics?
