Subject: Tuning question

I am building two seperate enclosures for 2 kicker 10"(2005 model) solo-barics. They recommend an enclosure of 1.25 cubic feet and I believe the tuning is 50hz. My question is the space I have is limited and I can get about .7 cubic feet tuned to around 50-54 hz. The boxes were built and I have a problem at moderate to high volume when testing them in my house before installation I can hear a sound like the voice coil is hitting off the backplate or pretty much what a subwoofer sounds like when its blown but if I play it at a regular volume where the sub stills is moving decently no problem. Is it a faulty sub or is the enclosure tuned to high? Also when I play the sub free-air at 20 hz like they recommend I dont hear the sound. Someone please help.
