Subject: Basic - High end sub, considering sealed dual small drivers 6.5" or 8"

I've spent days researching DIY subs, and I'm discovering just how much there is to learn.
--------------------------
The quick of it: ~3-5 cu' is OK, accuracy is paramount, low end extension and impact are important. Low price is desired, but I'll spend $500-$1200 if needed to meet my goals. I have a tank of an amp that'll drive 200W at 4 ohms, which I'd like to use for this sub.
--------------------------
The Details: I have a 550 sq' room with a pair of PMC FB1s and an old Cambridge Soundworks 12" sub (1.5 cu" stuffed). My room is about 550' sq.

The FB1s sound thin, and the CSW doesn't help without becoming ugly and boomy. As a test, I hooked up a pair of cheap old Advent sealed dual 8" towers off an amp on my LFE output. It fleshes out the sound pretty well. It doesn't go deep enough, and isn't accurate enough, but it's a step in the right direction.

I want clean accurate sound, but also want power and heft when the content calls for it (kick drums, movie effects, whatever). Comercially I'm leaning towards a Vandersteen V2W or 2Wq based on my experience with their towers. If I build my own I hope to use one channel on my Bryston 3BST (120W @ 8ohm, 200@4).

My initial thought was a 2x8" sealed sub. However, in the archives Pete strongly recommended the Ascendant Audio Atlas 12 sealed. I haven’t really found any 8" drivers that seem appropriate (the HiVi M8N was seems closest so far). I’ve also noticed speakers like the Scanspeak 23W/4557T00. I really don't know what I'm doing (other than spending days scrubbing my brain on specs and spreadsheets), and I'd appreciate help starting in the right direction.

Thanks,

Nick
