Re: enclosure material (slate) |

I have a friend who built a couple of pairs of speakers using slate cabs. They were auditioned by famed Pink Floyd producer Alan Parsons whose main criticism was that they could not go loud enough for pro use. The material works great for speaker cabs. The particular slate used was Welsh slate from the Nantlle valley which is very fine grained an not particularly brittle. Machining Welsh slate is quite time consuming and building cabs for commercial ends wouldn't be feasible. The other main objection for a Sub would be the weight. A large high quality driver, the electronics package and a slate cab is going to be a bit of a lump ( my friend's were ony bookshelf size with a 6inch bass mid), I advise you to do some calculation before commiting yourself.
