Thanks for the replies and the excellent advice.

The version I was looking at was the Sigma, but I haven't bought this yet; your comments about EQ reminded me of an article I read in Electronics and Wireless World, a UK publication. I might consider an alternative route :

Basically, some guy took a standard reflex design and shrunk it down to small proportions (approx 12x12x12 in) to see what would happen. The resulting response approximated to that of a sealed enclosure i.e. driver excursion became steadily limited by the enclosure below fs.

He then applied LF 'boost' using a Linkwitz Riley filter to drive a power amp; the shape of the active filter response was the inverse of the box reponse between fs and about 120hz, the net frequency response being essentially flat down to fs, after which things dropped off pretty quickly (12db per oct I think).

I'm going to look further into this before I go for the Eminence Sigma Pro and will report back if I meet with success.
