The reason we think this is so silly is because the voice coil is COMPLETELY isolated from the metal basket. If the coil rubbed against the frame (albeit a crappy speaker to begin with), a huge impeadence drop would occur because the amplifier's outputs are now connected with the car's common ground which would be a Bad Thing (TM) for both the amp and the speaker (as if rubbing wasnt bad enough) If there was a case that the ground would be helpful, the driver or amp would already be in the destroyed state and it wouldn't save anything or protect anything from further damage. Quite possibly create a high current short-circuit and mess up your car's electrical system. Still, all your doing is connecting the basket to the car's negative ground, which is doing absolutely nothing and not prevent any sort of blowout. Maby a lightnig strike to the driver's basket though...
