a horn is an acoustical transformer that matches the High impedence speaker to low impedence air.
efficiencies can be up to 50% or so.compare to sealed box of 2% approximately. <89db/1watt compared to 105db/watt>
this results in high efficiency,and in turn low excursion needed,good control of cone,and in also even better distortion because the driver can be underhung voice coil and be high quality and not compromise quality by having really high Xmax.
theres a few sites that deal with horns http://melhuish.org/audio/horn.htm
horns cant be modeled like ported boxes,however there is a tricky program out that can model them.
i myself am designing a basshorn like the LABSUB www.prosoundweb.com/lsp
using a shiva12.
