Sorry the acoustic delay lines I remembered were for TV signals (< microsecond delay), using piezo transducers on opposite ends of a glass rod...

For audio anything other than pure digital delay will introduce distortions (but there are approximations used for artificial reverb).

Actually most DVD players have a variable delay for the rear signals (but I couldn't hear a difference on mine when I tried it).
