funny you are all talking about this since i just bought new speakers and needed to buy some wire for the rears, i bought not the cheapest but was not thick!
it was only 90cents a metre (australian $$$) so that would be about 60cents US a metre. it sounds fine.
if you ever look inside even expensice speakers up around the thowsands you will see that they only use very thin cable compared to what the shops try and sell you... you really only need thick cable if you are running the cable over VERY long distances eg 50metres +
