In all reality, it makes very little difference at all. Resistance is the key here, and the distances that are covered in houses are typically less than 10 feet and need to cover only a few amps. Even mains household wiring is capable of 10 amps at 240V (in Australia) which is more than adequate. I prefer stranded wire because its more flexible and easier to work with. Check out "Belden's speaker cable" which includes a chart of size/power/distance for sound systems. And the power loss is in the order of fractions of a decible in the "normal" cables and just doesn't make sense to buy a $200 speaker cable, then try and decieve myself that there is a difference.
