I agree with the contents of that Adire article on woofer speed. Inductance is the limitation in how quickly the woofer responds to a signal.

Larger cones dont flex because they are larger - they flex because they arn't rigid enough. Its easy to make large cones that are also rigid so that cone flex doesn't occur.

As for cone mass affecting transient response - it does. But it does this in the degree of time taken to stop after the signal is removed - not how long it takes for the woofer to respond to a signal. Note this doesn't mean that heavier cones are an indicator of poor transient response, because it isn't. Because moving mass is relevant to Qms, then it does affect transient response, but its still possible to have heavier cones and retain good control of the diaphram by mechanical or electrical means.
