If your preamp has a subwoofer out, you will not need an external XO. If the output is full range, you will need one. I would get one that goes between the amp and preamp, not between the amp and woofer.
There are several options. . . .some people use a car XO with a 12 volt convertor (cheaper than a home XO), Harrison labs makes line level inline XO's called F-mods that you can get at Parts Express, or you can get a parametric EQ and use a couple of the bands to kill high frequencies. The parametric EQ will also allow you to tune the woofers response to the room. Many people use this one:

I bought mine at AMS because of the free extended warranty and they are an authorized dealer. I use two bands to further shape the low pass filter of my preamp as the frequency is to high.
