Yes that makes sense (also what Jakob said). BTW I don't think slight leaks make a difference to very low frequencies (no need to get cabinets absolutely airtight).

So large openings are like one big horn system, but difficult to predict... similar with home subwoofers - the whole house becomes an acoustic structure.

This is between the two theoretical situations (sealed volume and free space)... In our world things are obviously a lot harder to predict than for higher frequencies.
