3/4" MDF (medium density fiberboard) should be used and it should be coated with a layer of poly-urethane. This is because the MDF is poreous and air seeps through. As far as the volume goes, sealed enclosures require less internal air volume than say a vented enclosure would. In most cases the sealed is 25% smaller.
