The shape of a box doesn't change the way a sub sounds really. There is one thing that alot of people talk about which is called standing waves. Two designs you could use are a hemisphere (which some say is questionable and you really can't make anything like that easily) and certain ratio called the golden ratio (0.62:1:1.62). A rectangular box of this ratio will decrease the amount of standing waves inside. lining on the walls is also something used alot to decrease those. Now about materials to use. Most people use mdf and brace the walls via triangular peices. Vibrating walls will decrease your sound quality. Some stiffer more expensive wood would be better. My dad has experience with wood and we always use plywood, but you still need bracing on the big pieces. What school are you doing this for?
