I think people often refer to the sealed as being more SQ oriented simply based on the low group delay, and the mid-bass peak often created by a high-Q design (undersized box). The peak isn't actually more accurate, but a lot of people like it as it'll often fall into the kick-drum frequencies. As for frequency response, the ported box will be more accurate, but this comes at several expenses. Here is a quick list of + and - for each type of enclosure that I could think of:
Sealed box:
SQ: often described as being a "fast" as it'll have low "group delay" in milliseconds SQ: won't extend into the lower frequencies as it will have a higher F3 (frequency with 3db reduced volume) and F6 (-6db) SQ: Short but flat frequency response SQ: slow frequency drop-off below systems frequency point SPL: will have a lower average SPL due to the roll-off at a higher frequency Design: Small size Design: Easy to build
Ported design:
SQ: often described as being a "slower" as it'll have higher "group delay" in milliseconds SQ: can extend into the lower frequencies, as it will have a much low F3 and F6 SQ: Long and flatter frequency response into lower octaves SQ: fast frequency drop-off below tuning point SPL: will have a higher average SPL due to the low frequency extension Design: Larger Size Design: Harder to design and build
