I've had that same incident. I guess because of the strange ways that low freequency waves act they can still be very loud a few rooms away reverbirating in rooms with certain qualities carpeting and such. I believe its called standing waves? is this correct I've had one time when some guests were over and they went down my stairwell, and the bass was quite intense, even 2 rooms away from source. The only way I can think of making it soundproof, is to stuff the walls with insulation. I've heard that you put some kind of powder in between the wallboard or something. Maybe someone can be more specific.
