I cannot totally agree with you here. . . .
If an amp is rated 900 watts @ 4 ohms from 20-20k Hz, then it is not going to be only 450 watts, unless it is crap that has been cheated on the rating. Many amps have the frequency response rating and the power rating, but they do not tell you the 2 do not go together. The power output was actually rated at 1Khz.
There is no problem running 1500 watts to a speaker if it was made to handle 1500 watts. Take a Tumult. The speaker has 34mm of one way excursion and uses the XBL^2 motor. People who are already using these subs cannot believe the low distortion and the fact that these subs sound the same moving 5 mm or all the way out to 34mm.
Guys running brahma's in their vehicles are running over 1000 watts to these subs, making 150+ dB from a single 15" sub, and still winning SQ competitions with them!!!!
Like I said, you need a sub that can handle it, but with the right sub, there is nothing wrong with driving 1500 watts to it. . .
