Is there a noticeable difference in sound quality between the same subwoofer in a sealed and ported application, everything else being equal?
The general rule seems to be that a ported box gives you more SPL, but its range and response is more limited. A sealed box isn't as loud as a ported box, but has a better response and better sound quality.
Can anyone here confirm or deny the above statement?
I want a system that can get loud and shake the car to pieces AND has great sound quality, but sound quality comes first and SPL second. In other words, I'm not willing to compromise SQ just for a few more decibles, especially when we're talking 147db vs 150db, where you wouldn't listen to it that loud for very long anyway, unless you don't want to listen to it again, if you see what I mean.
So, my idea right now is to get 2 15 inch high excursion subwoofers, put them in a sealed box, and slap the power on (1000 watts or more to each sub).
The reasons I prefer sealed are:
1.) Better sound quality. 2.) Ported subs are easier to tear up if you don't power them right. 3.) Sealed boxes are easier to design and build and are lower maintence than ported boxes. 4.) Sealed boxes take up less space than ported boxes, since you generally need to make the ported box bigger than you would a sealed box for the same subwoofer.
Anyone have any ideas? Is the difference in sound quality between a ported and sealed box even noticable to the human ear? All recommendations or advice is welcome. Thanks.
