Subject: Perfectionist Audio sub questions

Hi everyone,

I've decided that I want to build the Perfectionist Audio sub (http://www.hogheaven.com/diyaudio/subwoofers/PATL/patl.html). This sub uses 2 x KEF B139 drivers, which are pretty much impossible to get hold of in Australia. It is a "transmission line" sub.

According to this page: http://www.t-linespeakers.org/drivers/B139_substitutes.html, these drivers can be considered "substitutes" to the KEF B139's. I can get hold of the Peerless and Vifa models as brand new drivers, however I'm wondering whether I will need to redesign the box if I use these instead of the KEF's.

I don't know much about subs or drivers (yet), but from my line of thinking, the Peerless' would be better since they have a tuning frequency of 22Hz, which is lower than the KEF's 25Hz. The Vifa's tuning frequency is 28Hz, which is obviously higher. Plus, some of the other specs of the Peerless' seem to be more similar to the KEF's than the Vifa's are to the KEF's. Am I correct in assuming that the Peerless drivers would be a more suitable substitute than the Vifa's?

Basically, what I'm asking is whether I can safely use the Peerless 850146's instead of the KEF B139's, while still retaining the same sub enclosure design. If this is not possible, how do I redesign the box to get the sound properties as close as possible to the original design? Is this possible, and if so, what software do I use, and how hard is it to do? Will I need a high level of knowledge to do this?

Finally, this sub requires a stereo amp. If I decide to just use a "normal" hi-fi stereo amp, how do I employ the use of a variable low-pass crossover? Is it possible to "add" these onto hi-fi amps?

Thanks for all your help,

Ben
