Subject: Can sound deadening material cause a loss of bass response?

Hello,

I recently installed a system in my 1996 Dodge Ram. It has a set of JL Audio Evolution XR-653 components with 6.5" woofers mounted in the doors and 4" midranges and 1" tweeters mounted in custom kick panels. The subwoofer is a 12 inch JL Audio W3 in a custom stealthbox made by JL Audio. The amp is a Precision Power PCX-480 powerclass amplifier with 80w rms powering the components and the rear channels bridged sending 320w rms to the sub.

Now, here is my question. The subwoofer sounds nice, and blends in great with the components. Excellent sound quality system. But it does not hit as hard as I expected it would. I always hear people talk about how hard the JL Audio 12W3s hit and what great subs they are. It sounds great, but it only shakes the inside of my car when I turn up the volume. I can definately feel it and it vibrates all the seats and the mirror, but you can barely hear it outside the vehicle when the windows are closed. It definately does not disturb the neighbors and you don't hear me coming from a mile away. What I want to know is, is this normal performance for this type of sub, or is something wrong? Here is the link to this particular model and the stealthbox that it is in if you want to see the specific design and details:

One thing that I think might be a problem is the sound deadening. I have 3 layers of brown bread sound deadener on floor, doors, and all interior panels. The sub is down firing, so it is firing right into the sound deadened floor. Could this be causing a decrease in SPL/loudness/bass response?

Like I said, I am totally pleased with the sound quality, it just doesn't hit as hard or get as loud as I expected from the reputation of the W3 subwoofer.

Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike
