The problem youre talking about with the clearness is most likely caused by the box. For most cases a sub box will have these values (compared to the others) Sealed - cleanest, tight sound. smallest SPL.
Ported - Medium response and SPL. Easiest box to destroy a sub
Bandpass/Reflex - very small frequency response, highest SPL inside it's range. complicated to build
Not any sub will sound good in any box, ask a local dealer or Circuit City to find out what kind and how big the box should be for the sub you choose.
