There is a BIG difference. Not just name.

A few things:

Distortion at high volumes. when the amp clips, is it soft,or does it send DC voltage to the driver?

The way the amp is rated. Companies 'cheat' in the amp's power rating to make it sound like it is more power than it actually is. they can do this by rating max power @ 1Khz instead of from 20 to 20K Hz. They can rate at higher distortion levels, or at different voltages. Companies like Rockford or MTX rate an amp's power, and you can bet it will truely produce that much power or more.

Build quality. Will it fail over time if driven hard for long periods of time?

How is the power supply? Power supplies are very important in an amp. Bad power supply design can also introduce noise into the system that is almost impossible to get rid of.

Damping factor; efficency; if you feed a sine wave into the input, how close to a sine wave do you get at the output?. . . . .And the list goes on.

If you are putting good money into your system, don't try to save money on the amp!!!

Brian
