Thanks for the great info. I checked out the tutorials at JL and learned alot. Electronics is a pretty straight-forward thing, but I lack the logic and linear thought to think for myself. :)
Ok, one more question. I've decided to use a shared space and therefore run the amp bridged. Which (if either) is considered better: parallel/series or series/parallel? Do I run parallel from the amp to each sub and the coils in series, or series from the amp and the coils in parallel? I know they both will give me 4 ohms load, but is one "better" than another.
The reason I'm running a shared volume is this: I have an 87 Old Cutlass. The fuel tank is under the left side of the trunk and the right side of the trunk pan has a large "sump" for holding the spare and jack. Its a rather free-form design, but displaces a good 2+ cu ft. I am going to reinforce this sump from the outside with extra metal, and from the inside by lining it with 5/16" fiberglass mat and epoxy. It certainly won't be ideal, but we're not talking about super high-end stuff. I could make two separate chambers, but given the free form design it will be very difficult to get them equal. For the top, I'll simply make a face to mount the subs with 3/4" MDF and screw it to the floor. I'll most likely fill the hole with a known volume of sand to check its volume and I can vary the volume by spacing up the MDF with strips of MDF. Then the whole thing I'll cover with fiberglass over the whole top to make it look like it was meant to be there, and I can paint it to match.
One of you had asked about specs on the subs. Here is what's posted in the literature:
they are Audiobahn AW1051Q
FO (Hz) 30.8 Qms 3.82 Qes .49 Qts .43 Vas 59L (2.1 ft^3) EBP 63 Revc 3.6 ohms SPL(1w/m) 87.4 Xmax 14mm peak-peak Levc(mH) .76 enclosures: sealed min .53 sealed max 1.06 (both 50% poly fill) 3dB down at min 55 3dB down at max 48 vented volume .88 3dB down 40 vented to 35 port 2.5" x 10.3 or 3" x 15"
Most of these numbers mean nothing to me. They are 300W max, so probably 150 max per coil, and I'm guessing 75 RMS. Given the size of the coil and magnet, though I'll bet they are underrated to go with their underrated amps. The amp is 50x2, but is accepted to actually put out over 300 RMS bridged at .01% THD. Its kinda like looking at a Rockford Fosgate amp. You see a foot-long amp and they call it a 20x4. Yeah, right.
I know a few of the numbers above and they don't look great (certainly not THX material) but being a musician, I just trust my ear. They are by far the best bang for the buck in my opinion if you don't mind driving them with a little more amp. They don't respond well to low power as gracefully as an Eclipse or JL. I'm very impressed with their suspension. They make some of the nicest punches I've heard. I listen to jazz and classic rock and they really shine. One thing that really impresses me is how conststent they are throughout the range of volume. So many times subs hum at low levels and as they approach Xmax start to sound "poppy." The Audiobahns sound very consistent right up to Xmax. I get them cheap, but the subs retail for around $100 each. I usually pay just over dealer cost because I photographed the store owner's wedding for free :)
Thanks again! Curtis
