From what i've read you are right to a point. Silicon is known to cause damage. But the advantage of Silicon is it doesn't dry hard. It remains flexible and will remain airtight for a long time. So if the shape of the enclosure changes with time (a long time) then the Silicon will keep it air tight. What I do is put Silicon around the internal seams and wait 24 hours for it to dry. Some Silicon is for home use and doesn't smell as much, but you should still wait for it to dry.
