The difference would be if the equations require a 38" long port in a 1.0 cubic foot box... this is not sensible.
The differences you are probably talking about are the ideal port size versus sensible. The ideal port size calculation is to show you how big the port should be to minimize port noise and air velocity.
The sensible port sizes are 1", 2", 3", 4" and so forth with a couple in between. All of these diameters can be used,... though with subs, I would NEVER use anything less than 3".
A good place to go, the local hardware store for a piece of PVC. Now I know a flared port specially made are nice, but a cheap piece of PVC gets it done, just make sure it is filed and sanded on each end where the saw makes slice marks. Other than that bra', you're all right. Just remember, when designing the box, if using 3/4" wood, subtract an inch and a half from each dimension. So if the box is 12" x 14" x 16" calculate 10.5 x 12.5 x 14.5. Multiply the numbers together and divide it by 1728, and this will give you the amount of cubic footage available inside the box.
