A plate amplifier is simply an amplifier which is directly mounted into the back of the subwoofer enclosure. You just cut a hole in the back of your box and mount it in. Check out the picture below and you will see.




See how the amp is mounted in the box itself???

Did you say you had one of those jaycar/response brand subwoofers??? Are you talking about the doublemagent woofer, as you said it can be wired for both 4 and 8 ohm operation (i need to know which woofer you are talking about). IE: Is it the DVC sub?

If an amp is both 4 ohm and 8 ohm capable, sometimes the amp will still just have one output in which you can put whatever impedance that the amp supports on it. However if the amp supports both 4 and 8 ohm, use the driver in 4 ohm mode on the 4 ohm output of the amp (will give you an increase in SPL).

Jaycar has very good subwoofer plate amplifiers if you are in australia. Get the 350wrms version AU$399. Otherwise you can get a plate amp from adire audio.
