I built one,
if you tune it real low (>20Hz) you actually get a not boomy response. I suppose it is, because the more the frequency is away from the resonance the more it behaves like a closed box.
Since the ported enclosures are quite sensitive volumewise, it would not be a bad idea to take the volume of the amp in account (if it's more then 1 or 2 Liters)
I do both alternatives you were thinking about, to get a deep bass, using PRs to get a higher output capability in the lower region (12-20Hz) and then boost it. That way the resonance is far enough away to mess up the "musical" bass, and I have a low end (where the SQ doesn't matter too much, or can some tell if that 15Hz punch was "tight" or "boomy")
