I am in the early planning stages of putting together a powered sub for my home stereo, which sees a duty split of about 60% HT/40% music. I thought about buying one and was doing some research when I came across some folks who built their own with good results, so I decided to give it a shot. Last winter I built an enclosed trailer. This has to be easier than that, right?
My receiver is a Yamaha RX-V592 feeding 80 watts through Blues(anyone remember Blues speakers?) towers with dual 8" drivers. I'm guessing they roll off(quickly) somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 Hz.
I've got a loose plan in place, but I'm looking to pick up as much info as possible to make the right decisions... At the moment, I am leaning toward a sealed enclosure to keep the sound tight and clean(and easy to build). Also, based on what I have seen doing research on the internet, I am leaning toward the Adire Audio Shiva driver. However, I am a bit concerned that I will not get really deep extension out of a sealed box. Is that a valid concern? I've noticed that some of the plate amps(the ones at Parts Express) offer a boost at lower frequencies. Is that a desirable solution?
If my figures are right, to get the 'ideal' Qtc of .707, I need a 2.33ft^3 box. Is this right? That doesn't really seem that big. My wife won't let me build anything huge, but I don't want to sacrifice performance, either, so I can go a bit larger if it's worth it. Will I be satisfied with 250 RMS feeding a 12" driver in a seled box? I know I am sacrificing some efficiency with the sealed route, but I am more interested in quality than the quantity. However, I don't want to be left wanting for more.
Thanks! -dave
