Just an elaboration: a sphere has the least amount of effect on the overall sound because it has the best diffraction loss characteristics. Internal standing waves can be minimized using box stuffing+lining (most, if not all, enclosures use stuffing anyway).

BUT for low frequencies, yes, any enclosure shape can be used.
