Building an amp such as a Class-B amp takes some nasty engineering if you want low noise. I have a book that explains everything that there is to know about Class-B amps. This book is titled "Audio Power Amplifier Design Handbook" by Douglas Self. If you are afraid of taking this route you can go to Velleman and buy their amps. They have efficient Class-A amps that never needs adjustments even at 2 ohms. All they need is power, a load, and an audio signal. They are very high grade amps designed for PA use, but they can be used for subwoofer use too.
About the active filter. You newbies don't know the active subwoofer filter that John Poemann design. You can find the link in the "The Subwoofer DIY Page". That circuit gives you everything that you need to blend your subwoofer in your sound system. To me that circuit isn't high grade but it is good for starters. If you want a high grade that is easy to predict the crossover point. There is this one active filter. This filter uses an analog multiplier and a op-amp to achieve a linear response and very low noise. I have to find the information for this type of filter in my magazines. It will take me a while because I got several.
