Usually, you can connect your Left and Right cable to the amp (for the sub) and then the amp to the sub in a bridged configuration. The amp should combine both Left and Right sugnals into a mono signal automatically. There should be a switch on the amp that says "STEREO" and "MONO". Make sure it's set to "STEREO". If it's at "MONO", only 1 input will be active.
Using this configuration should eliminate the need of a Y cable.
