An outboard electronic crossover would take the low frequencies from the F&R pre-outs and send them to an output for your sub amp. If you use an outboard crossover, use one with inputs for all 4 pre-outs from the head unit and gives outputs for L&R front, L&R rear & sub output. The outboard x-overs (about $100 & up) have more flexability to adjust but aren't necessarily better than a head w/sub outs. The easy way would be to consider an Alpine amp with a sub output. It would simplify things. Connect it, adjust it, enjoy your tunes ;)
